“My Friends” by Fredrik Backman || Alli Reads

Editor Note: Another Alli review! I know that she’s a little more soured about this book than she’s willing to say online. And I know that this editor note is undermining that very point. I hope she’s not mad that I’m writing this. Enjoy!

This is also a Winter Madness Book Tournament selection. Check out the full bracket here.

If you look closely at one of the most famous paintings in the world, you’ll notice three tiny figures sitting at the edge of a long pier, overlooking the ocean. When Louisa, a young aspiring artist herself, unexpectedly comes into possession of this painting, she embarks on a surprise-filled cross-country journey to learn the origins of the painting, its enigmatic figures, and what to do with it.

This, ultimately, is a story about the power of art and of belonging as refuge from an otherwise bruising world.

My Friends is much slower and verbose than much of Backman’s other notable works, including the Beartown trilogy, A Man Called Ove, and even Anxious People. While this was a barrier for me personally, it still seems to resonate with many readers, especially art lovers!
